Chapter 23
Los Angeles, California
“Turn a little to your right, please,” the seamstress said.
Ben turned his body, but kept his eyes on Marla and Loren sitting at his kitchen table. He didn’t want to wear this suit. Didn’t want go to the New Year’s Eve party.
Not without Danielle.
“The press seems to have moved on from our little debacle,” Marla said. “Of course, it helps that George Clooney’s wife is threatening to leave him if he doesn’t give up riding a motorcycle.”
“Just make sure the interview with The TODAY Show is finalized before the New Year’s Eve party,” Loren said. “With that on the docket, we can show the world Benjamin Lawson is still the king of rock.”
Ben suppressed a sigh. The sooner the seamstress finished his alterations, the sooner he could go back to working on his newest song idea. “Have you talked to Danielle?”
“No, but there’s one resume that looks particularly promising,” Loren said.
Ben shot Loren a look that was meant to kill.
Marla crossed the room. “This is positively divine on you, Benjamin,” she said. “The right combination of power and grace.”
“All done.” The seamstress slid the suit jacket from Ben’s shoulders. “It’ll be ready for the party on Friday.”
Ben waited for the seamstress to pack her bag and exit out his front door. He turned to Loren. “Danielle?”
Loren sighed. “I don’t know what else we can do,” he said. “She won’t return my calls.”
“What did you expect?” Marla glared at Loren; apparently Ben wasn’t the only one pissed off about Danielle being fired. “You were a dickhead.”
Ben was past the point of being pissed; he was sick to his stomach with worry Danielle wouldn’t come back. How would he get through this tell-all interview?
He had to fix this.
“Look, Ben.” Marla’s voice took on the smoother tones meant to placate. “Danielle may not want to come back. We’ve made the effort; we can’t ‘make it right’ if she won’t talk to us.”
She wouldn’t talk to Loren, but would she talk to him? “I’ll call her,” Ben said.
Loren and Marla exchanged glances. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Loren said.
“Oh, shut up,” Marla said. “He has a much better chance of getting through to her. She might actually care enough about Ben to deal with you.”
Did Danielle care about him? He didn’t deserve it, but God, he hoped she did.
“If I talk to her, and she doesn’t want to come back…” Ben’s voice trailed off; he hated to think this way but… “Then we move on.”
He could tell Loren was relieved, although he tried not to show it.
New Year’s Eve was only two days away, and Ben wanted Danielle by his side when he faced the public again. He needed her there.
Ben grabbed his phone off the table and let himself onto the balcony. He closed the door behind him and just stood there. What would he say?
She’d asked for honesty from him, so that’s what he would give her. He owed her that much, at least.
The phone rang four times before it went to voice mail.
